We trip to Wayanad, Kerala on 2017 in the month of november. We book our car from skyout for a week. "We" here are my girlfriend and I. We love to travel but aren't able to do much. Reason - Work. Yeah, same as yours. There are other factors as well - Time and Money. But it is your work that defines the latter two. I never wanted to be stuck in routine life but here I am - caught up in this daily drama of office and home. Anyways the good part - our recent visit to this beautiful waterfall. We started from our Hotel Wayanad Coffee Trails in morning, visited Banasura Sagar Dam first then this one.
It is situated at 25-30 km from Kalpetta which a central part in Wayanad. Meenmutty waterfall is at 4-5 km distance from Banasura Sagar Dam. So, both can be covered together.
Tickets: Entry is 20 Rs per person. Timing: Early morning till 5pm. Same as other tourist attraction in Wayanad except Phantom Rocks.
Commuting: You can reach here by a car or an auto. We have car . Good deal considering the distance you travel ~ 120 km.
Trek: It is a 1 km trek to reach the top. Although, you don't have to go till top to enjoy the views and waterfall. There are proper railings on sides for support. It gets a little slippery so make sure that you have a nice pair of shoes.
Bath: Yeah, you can have a bath here. By the time you reach the top, you will be all sweaty and a dip in water doesn't do any harm.
Safety: It's safe compared to other waterfalls. Although it depends, on the amount of rain happening in that month. We went in August, it was pretty much decent. There are government guards around to ensure safety. But at the same time they don't interfere while you are enjoying.
Toilets: Not well maintained. Final Review: Must visit place in Wayanad. One of the best waterfall in that area. Clean place with proper security. Try to visit Banasura Sagar Dam and Meenmutty Waterfalls together. Totally worth it.
For some strange reason, ‘Meenmutty’ seems to be a common name for many waterfalls in Kerala’s western ghats. We have heard of at least three—two in Wayanad and one in Thiruvananthapuram. “Meen Mutty’ roughly translates to ‘fish blocked.’
However, we did not know that there are two Meenmutty falls in Wayanad till we reached the picturesque Banasura Sagar dam. We were earlier told that the famous Meenmutty falls near Kalpetta, a three-tired waterfall and the second largest in Kerala, has been closed for safety reasons. And we had reconciled to it.
As we drove into the parking area of Banasura Sagar dam, a small board saying ‘Meenmutty falls – 2.5 kms’ caught our attention. Yes, there is a second ‘Meenmutty falls’ in Wayanad. A quick realignment in the itinerary, and soon after our dam visit, we were on our way to the falls.
After a 2-km drive and less than a kilometre hike, we were on the banks of the river. What followed is a fascinating climb and hike right up to the waterfalls through massive rocks—some dangerously slippery—and a gushing stream. There were safety ropes across the path, tied to tree trunks or rocks on both sides of the stream. It is a 20-odd minute careful climb. We then returned down through the forest trail. Only to get into the water again for a nice refreshing dip.
